Concrete overlays are a polymerized, cement-based protective coating that you can apply over a variety of surfaces such as concrete, wood, and tile. Concrete overlays are very thin and can be applied feather-edged thin or up to two inches thick.
Concrete overlays are unique to the manufacturer. No two proprietary blends are identical. But all concrete overlays have common elements – they’re blended Portland types of cement with various aggregates and strong polymer resins. The polymers are the star of the show. They hold everything together, acting as the bonding agent in the overlay.
You can easily create a “like new” appearance with concrete overlays and repairs that will garner visual interest and improve function through a wide range of colors, textures, and patterns. Stamped, broom-finished, and smooth finishes are the most popular options.
Overlays can give almost any concrete surface, indoors or outdoors, a complete face-lift at a much lower cost than removal and replacement. And overlays are known to last on surfaces that were prepared for the application.
The cement must be clean, void of loose or flaky areas, and free of deep spalling or cracks. Sometimes it’s necessary to treat the concrete with a concrete densifier and hardener for older, porous concrete surfaces, as this will prepare it for the overlay.
